18 Mai 2009 -  These are images of public art photographed on Waiheke Island... Works of art that are either on public land or that can be viewed from the public space...

Please contact me if you know of such work of art not already represented here...

Matiatia
Matiatia bay is the main gateway of the Island. It is a place rich in history, yet relatively poor in public art.

"Contour" by Jeff Thomson  is a very controversial large scale corrugated iron sculpture... I my opinion, it was better situated further up the hill during the 2005 exhibition and much of its impact is lost in its current location.

"A metal structure" by unknown artist. This was probably not intended as a work of art but it seems to be purposely displayed at the end of the boardwalk. It is also reminiscent of many contemporary conceptual creations. Add  silly title, a sillier price tag and some pretentious artspeak and it could fetch good money...
An unfinished rock carving used to stand in its place. The site is a perfect opportunity for "Port of Auckland" to embellish its Matiatia asset.

"Untitled"  by Telecom. This contemporary monumental piece stands tall next to a majestic old pine tree, It seems to try to hide itself while keeping a watchful eye on the cars parked below...It would feel right at home amongst the collection of contemporary art in a sculpture park..

"Think on Rodin" by Paora Te Rangiuaia, Oamaru stone .  This piece occupies a prime spot amongst the cars parking in the valley.  It is Paora's cubist take on Rodin's "The Thinker" (Here is my own take on "The Thinker")

In the garden of the "Lazy Lounge" cafe. A structure reminiscent of the style of Chris Booth or is it a piece by the master himself?

A red palm tree on private property. It must be the work of a renown artist... The fronds look like a work by Virginia King....Let me know...This tree is visible from one of Waiheke many walking tracks. Credit where credit is due. The Auckland City Council is getting a lot of flak from their regular mismanagement of the Island's affairs. However ACC must be congratulated on the creation and maintenance of a network of walking tracks crisscrossing the Island... A great asset for residents and visitors..

Palm Beach
Palm beach is mostly a holiday village. Not many people live there in winter. It is rather poorly populated in public art too. But there is a couple of gems to be found...

Onetangi
Onetangi is a magnificent beach (shame about beach front properties and a road build right on the sand dunes, both contributing to a cruel lack of shade trees.) Check again later for Onetangi artworks..
